About Our Events

Hunts For Healing offers a variety of challenging activities throughout the year ranging from traditional hunting and fishing outings to gun builds and family camp. Each event typically has six participants. Each Participant is assigned a volunteer mentor. All events, except Family Camp, start on a Wednesday afternoon and end on the following Sunday morning. Family Camp starts on Sunday and ends the following Sunday.

The events are titled for the primary focus; however our goal is to keep you busy. We have lots of activities to cover any down time. We generally have a pheasant hunt during the flintlock deer, gun build, and inline events. During the turkey event we offer trout fishing. Often most hunters bag a doe early in the inline event and we hunt ducks in addition to pheasants. We may also build a hunting knife and sheath.

These events, with the exception of the gun build, are held at no charge to the participants and include:

  • meals (often home cooked)
  • lodging (bunks on premises)
  • supplies (gear & equipment, licenses, ammo, etc.)
  • All travel and lodging, if any, to and from the events*

*During the event we will ask for your travel receipts to the event. We then multiply that figure by 2 and give you a check. We limit food expenses on travel days to $25 a day per participant.

I just finished a black powder hunt with them and can't say enough how fantastic it was. The staff are some of the best people you'll ever meet in your life. They take it as a personal mission to make sure everyone has what they need and enjoy their stay there. The hunts were some of the best that I've had in my life. We hunted deer, ducks and pheasant and everyone tagged out on deer, got pheasant and ducks. I would put these guys up against the best outfitters on the planet.

Flintlock Deer Hunt: Jan 3 - 7, 2024

Step back in time and pursue a deer with a flintlock rifle. PA flintlock season generally runs from Dec. 26 to the middle of Jan. We usually schedule this hunt in the 2nd week of January. The deer have been hunted since early Sep. and the survivors are wary. The weather is often cold and we are hunting with primitive weapons. This can be a challenging, but very rewarding hunt. You get to use one of our .54 cal flintlock rifles which are handmade and donated to us by local craftsmen. These weapons are gorgeous. We have access to hunt over 2,000 acres of land around or close to the lodge. We concentrate on helping our landowners by removing doe from the herd. During the day we post you and your mentor on a stand and drive the deer your way. Toward evening we may put you on a stand overlooking a food plot. Our hunter success rate is 90%. Everyone gets shooting (some multiple times) and most end up with a deer. As with most of our events we pay for everything including processing your deer. Warning: this hunt is addictive – you may leave with a desire to own a flintlock rifle.

    Flintlock Rifle Build: Mar 13- 17, 2024

How would you like to build a fully functional, historically correct flintlock rifle from a kit? We use Jim Kibler’s kits for this build. These are CNC machined parts that easily fit together. You will be assigned a mentor who has successfully built this rifle. We also have craftsmen, who build flintlocks for a living, on-site to help train and encourage you. The kits cost us $1,000 each. We require you to pay $500 of this cost. The professionals who buy, assemble, and finish these kits, sell them for over $3,000. This is a very popular event and is limited to 6 participants. At the end you will have a fully functioning weapon – we even shoot them, weather permitting.

      Spring Turkey Hunt: May 8- 12, 2024

If it’s May in PA, it’s spring turkey season. We usually schedule this event for the first week in May during turkey mating season. This is a hunt for bearded turkeys only. The Game Commission schedules the start of this season for the time that historically half the hens are already bred. You now have half the female population out of the picture and all the Toms still looking for action. Shotguns are the only legal firearm during this season. We can provide the shotgun or, if you have your own, you may bring it with you. All shotguns are limited to a 3 round capacity. The weather in NEPA is usually very mild this time of year. Russ Wagner, the owner of Top Calls and champion turkey caller, closes his production shop, gathers his employees, brother and friends and makes the journey to Ringneck Ridge to provide the callers for this event. You will be teamed up with a mentor and caller. The season starts 1/2 hour before dawn and hunters must be out of the woods by 1PM. We have a good success rate with this event. You will hear and see turkeys and most of our guests get a decent shot. The rest is up to you. We have many activities to fill the rest of the afternoon. We usually visit our sister organization, Patriots Cove, one day to fly fish their native trout stream. We are also hosted by the Back Mountain Police Association for a trout fish in a local lake. All of this is no cost to you.

        Old Glory Shoot: June14, 2024

The Old Glory Sporting Clay Tournament is Hunts for Healing’s main fundraiser.   It is held annually on the Friday closest to June 14th at Rock Mountain Sporting Clays in Springville, PA.   Rock Mountain is considered to be one of the premier courses on the East Coast.

We also like to have a team of Veterans attend. If you would like to participate in the Old Glory Shoot Veterans’ Team, please contact us.

        River Trip: TBD

We schedule this event for the end of July or early August. Endless Mountain Outfitters, one of our sponsors, provides us with kayaks and canoes to float about 40 miles of the Susquehanna River. July’s weather in NEPA is generally 50-60 degrees in the morning warming to the 80’s in the afternoon. We generally float bout 20 miles on Thursday, make camp, then take a day off on Friday to visit our sister organization, Patriots Cove, fish and relax. Saturday we are back on the water and finish with an onshore pizza party. The Susquehanna River is one of the longest non-navigable in the US. It is a premier smallmouth bass fishery. On the float, we take time to fish, swim, and watch wildlife. We normally see lots of eagles, and deer and have also spotted river otters and bear. You can bring a guest on this trip.

          Family Camp: TBD

For this 7-day event, we rent a campground complete with a dining hall and cabins. This whole event is geared for you, your significant other and your children. We pack this week with activities for the children, the spouses and veterans. We offer wood carving, knife building, fishing lure making, flintlock and 22 shooting, fishing, swimming, boating, massage therapy, arts and crafts and much more. We try to schedule this event for early July. It is a fun week and gets great reviews from our guests. Again, there is no cost for you.

            Fishing Event: Sep 20 - 24 2023

We normally schedule this event for mid to late September. If we’re lucky, it will be Indian summer with temps in the forties at night and around 80 during the day. Thursday morning we will meet a group of fishing guides and fish the Susquehanna River for smallmouth bass on jet-drive boats. The Susquehanna River is a premier smallmouth bass fishery and the guides know the river well. Friday morning we normally get back on the river with a different group of boat operators for more smallmouth fishing. Saturday morning we travel to a private lake to fish for largemouth bass and enjoy an excellent noon meal prepared by our host. We normally visit our sister organization, Patriots Cove, one afternoon and fly fish his native trout stream. This stream holds some very impressive trout. We normally grill burgers and dogs at Patriots Cove then return to Ringneck Ridge. If it’s not too hot we may get in a pheasant hunt.

              Inline Muzzleloader Deer: Oct 18 - 22 2023

PA holds a doe-only muzzleloader season for 1 week during October, usually in the 3rd week. The leaves are changing color, the weather is usually nice and the deer have not been hunted very much. This is a great time to be in Northeastern PA. Our inline weapons are .50cal and are scoped. Often most hunters have harvested their deer by the end of the second day. As mentioned above, we fill in the rest of the time with hunts for ducks and pheasants, fishing, building a knife and sheath or maybe a trip to the indoor range or a round of sporting clays.
